“Cut” by Sylvia Plath

“Cut” by Sylvia Plath is a poem about a women who cuts of a part of her thumb and describes the many events that occur after she cuts her thumb.

A technique Plath uses in “Cut” is similes an example of a simile used in the poem “Cut” is when Plath cuts of her thumb and then describes the remains as “a flap like a hat”. Another technique Plath uses in “Cut” is metaphors an example of a metaphor used in “Cut” is “out of a gap A million soldiers run redcoats, every one.”With this metaphor Plath is describing the blood coming out of the thumb as like redcoats coming into battle.

During the poem “Cut” the mood changes a number of times ranging from exited to shocked to self hate. An example of how the mood changes is when Plath writes “I am ill. I have taken a pill to kill”. This line shows that the mood is dizzy and nauseous. Another example of how the mood changes throughout the poem is when Plath writes “How you jump Trepanned veteran, Dirty girl, Thumb stump.”  This line shows how the mood has changed to self hate.

The poem “Cut” by Sylvia Plath was interesting and well written. One reason for this was because Plath described the events of cutting her thumbby reflecting American history and society e.g Ku,Klux,Klan, Turkey wattle, Red Coats. Another reason why “Cut” was an interesting and well written poem was because Plath used many techniques such as similes and metaphors to put an image in the readers heads of what was going on in the poem.
