Romeo and Juliet

In the play Romeo and Juliet the protagonist is Romeo a young man who is from the Italian city of Verona. He is a part of the Montague family. Romeo is very impulsive, this makes the play exiting and fast paced. Romeo’s impulsiveness helped me understand the main idea of consequences of revenge.

Romeo is an impulsive character so this makes the play enjoyable to read. There are many examples of Romeo’s impulsiveness throughout the play. One of the examples of Romeo’s impulsiveness is when he kills Tybalt out of revenge because Tybalt killed Mercutio a good friend of Romeo’s. Romeo kills Tybalt without thinking of the consequences of his actions. This can be shown with the quote “Either thee, or I, or both must go with him”.

Another one of Romeo’s characteristic is that he is rebellious; he does not follow rules that are given to him by his parents or the local authorities. One of the reasons why Romeo is rebellious is because of his impulsiveness. One example of Romeo’s rebellious behavior is when he marries Juliet without consulting his or Juliet’s parents. Romeo knows that Juliet’s parents would not approve because Juliet is of the Capulet family who are rivals with the Montagues. But Romeo still goes ahead with marrying Juliet.

Romeo is also a very emotional character and his immaturity is shown when he goes through mood swings throughout the play. For example just before Romeo falls in love with Juliet he was heartbroken after losing Rosaline his love before Juliet. This can be shown with the quote “O braving love! O loving hate! O anything of nothing first create”. This shows that Romeo’s life is an emotional rollercoaster.

In the play Romeo and Juliet the main idea is of how revenge ends badly. Because Romeo is impulsive it relates to the main idea of revenge. Killing Tybalt is a key example of revenge and impulsiveness. Tybalt is angry at Romeo and Mercutio because they gate crashed the Capulet, this can be shown with the quote “By the stock and honour of my kin to strike him dead “. Tybalt wants revenge so he kills Mercutio. This conflict shows how revenge ends badly and has bad consequences.

In the play ‘ Romeo and Juliet’ Romeo was an enjoyable character to read about because of his impulsive, rebellious and emotional behavior which helped me understand the main idea in the play which is how revenge ends badly.
