The poem “An examination of her body after death” (Examination) by Glen Colquhoun is a poem about Colquhoun mourning the loss of a close friend.

In this essay I will describe two main ideas involved with the poem which are  denial and remembrance. I will also describe two language features (negative language) and (metaphors) that Colquhoun uses to portray the two main ideas in the poem.

One of the main ideas in the poem “Examination” is denial and the poet uses negative language and repetition to show this throughout the poem. The poet gets an idea of denial by using repetition and negatives for example at the start of each verse Colquhoun starts of by saying “You are not her…” This not only shows repetition by using the sentence at the start of every verse but it also shows denial because of the negative word no. It also shows the poet is in frustration and disbelief.

Another main idea in “Examination” is remembrance and the poet uses metaphors throughout the poem to show this idea. For example when Colquhoun writes “These are broken headlights on a car”. This metaphor describes what his dead friend looks like now that she is dead and it is a contrast from what the poet remembers his friend when she was alive “The shining sun”.

There are two main ideas in the poem “Examination”. Denial because the poet can’t face the fact that he has lost a close friend, this is shown by the use of negatives and repetition. The other main idea is remembrance because the poet contrasts what his frined looked like now that she is dead and remembers her when she was alive, the poet shows this through the use of metaphors.
